"A" is for the Arts!

This year at Kaleb's Elementary School they were awarded a grant which provided the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning program to come in and teach grades K-6 grades a dance. Apparently, the arts programs are in trouble in our school districts and are most likely going to be eliminated from the schools system unless parents speak up to their legislators. This would include removing art classes, music/band classes and any type of dance courses from Elementary Schools and possibly up into Middle and High Schools. I have always enjoyed the arts and found this to be so sad. Hopefully this won't come to pass because I always enjoyed the arts. After learning about this topic, I was glad that Kaleb's Elementary school was given the opportunity to be involved in this grant.

Last night, Mark and I were able to go and watch Kaleb and the rest of his classmates preform a dance that they have been learning for the past 2 months on fridays. Each dance that the Kindergarteners through 6 graders learned were roughly based around something that each grade was learning about this year in their focused studies. The dance the kindergartners performed dealt with color, emotion, contrast and movement that we are apart of everyday. All these things together help determine who we are and how we act each particular day. The dance was also based on the book, "My many colored days" by Dr. Seuss. Kaleb had so much fun participating in this dance. He was so proud that he got the chance to participate in this modern dance production and was given an orange ribbon on a stick to twirl and do different motions with and also preform different motions with his body. Kaleb seemed to have a lot of fun with his classmates performing his dance. After his performance, we took him to McDonald's as a reward for his hard work and he enjoyed playing on the play place toys which also happened to be related to the arts, music and dance. Some of the McDonald's toys included, A slide that is shaped like a piano and plays music when you slide down it, drums that you can tap on and a guitar you can strum.
I hope that Kaleb will have this wonderful opportunity to perform a dance next year with his class!
